JS Bach: St John Passion

Cleveland Philharmonic Choir
Mowbray Orchestra

Conductor: John Forsyth MBE

Chamber Organ: Andrew Christer
Evangelist: Michael Bell (tenor)
Jesus: Patrick Owston (baritone)
Ava da Costa (soprano)
Lauren Bagge (mezzo)
Max Robbins (tenor)
Nick Stoner (bass)

St John Passion tells the story of the last days of the life of Christ, conveying the drama and emotions with wonderfully effective music, enhanced by the playing of the excellent Mowbray Orchestra.

The Evangelist is the story-teller, and other soloists take the roles of Jesus, Peter and Pilate to bring the story to life.

The choir acts as the crowd, but sings choruses such as ‘Hail, Lord and Master’ at the start and ‘Sleep well’ at the end, together with hymn-like chorales, reflecting on the story.
